A special request from Atlas Grand Lobby & Bar, Singapore
One of Singapore’s most exclusive addresses, Parkview Square, is as of last month home to an incredible new bar, Atlas Grand Lobby & Bar. Designed in an Art Deco style circa Paris in 1925 - you’ve never seen so much marble - it’s opulent and lavish, with a gin and Champagne collection to match. We were thrilled to be briefed by Atlas Head Bartender Roman Foltán and Master of Gin Jason Williams to create a gin to join Atlas’s 1000-strong gin collection, which has been sourced from all over the world. The team were looking to match a description of “orange gin” they’d found in a classic cocktail book published in the early 20th century, and so the challenge was set. Lead by Archie Rose’s Master Distiller Dave Withers, the team created a dry gin with layers of complicity from different orange distillates including whole naval oranges, bergamot peel, Curaçao peel and Valencia orange peel. As you might have guessed, a pronounced orange accent is to the fore, supported by citrus notes from coriander, a dryness from juniper and woody cardamom. If you’ve ever tried Julia Rodin’s famed whole orange cake, you’ll get the idea.
If you’re swinging by Singapore, drop by Atlas for a cocktail made with our custom Orange Gin. They’re serving it as a French 25 with honey, lemon, Scrappy’s Lavender Bitters and Champagne, and in The Great Jeweller with green Chartreuse, sweet vermouth and Scrappy’s Orange Bitters. The French 75 is a classic cocktail named after a French artillery gun from WWI known for it’s accuracy and speed. The gun had quite the kick and the combination of gin and champagne is no different.
